Cold Chain Cargo

Chilled dairy, from processor to shelf.

Fresh milk, yoghurt, cheese, butter and other chilled dairy moved by refrigerated road transport to retailers, wholesalers and food service.

Not all dairy needs the same cold chain.

Pasteurised milk, yoghurt, soft cheese and cream depend on staying cold from processor to shelf. UHT milk and many long-life products are made to travel at ambient temperature. Ice cream and frozen desserts need to stay frozen.

We plan dairy loads around the product type and its labelled storage temperature, so chilled products stay chilled and the cold chain is not spent on products that do not need it.

What chilled dairy needs on the road.

Dairy is short-life, high-volume and delivered to many receivers, which makes every handover count.

  • Kept cold without a break

Pasteurised and fresh dairy lose shelf life with every period spent warm, so loading and deliveries are planned to keep doors closed.

  • Frozen dairy kept frozen

Ice cream and frozen desserts travel frozen, separately from chilled dairy unless the equipment can hold both.

  • Clean, odour-free equipment

Milk, butter and cheese pick up odours easily, so they do not share space with strongly smelling cargo.

  • Date-sensitive deliveries

Short shelf lives mean delivery dates and receiving times are agreed before the load leaves.

Frequently asked questions

Which dairy products need refrigerated transport?

Pasteurised milk, yoghurt, cream, soft cheese and other fresh dairy usually need to stay chilled. Ice cream and frozen desserts need to stay frozen. UHT and many long-life products are made to travel at ambient temperature.

Does UHT milk need a refrigerated truck?

Usually not. UHT milk is heat-treated to keep at ambient temperature until it is opened. Follow the storage instruction on the product.

Can chilled and frozen dairy travel together?

Only where the equipment can hold each at its own temperature. Otherwise chilled dairy and ice cream travel separately.

Why does dairy need separate, clean equipment?

Milk, butter and cheese absorb odours easily and are sensitive to contamination, so they travel in clean equipment, apart from strongly smelling cargo.

What do you need to plan a dairy load?

The products and their storage temperatures, quantity or pallet count, delivery points, receiving times and any date or batch requirements.
