Cold Chain Cargo

Frozen from the plant's freezer to the next one.

Frozen foods and prepared meals moved by refrigerated road transport, kept frozen through every loading, transfer and delivery.

A frozen product that thaws is not the same product.

Frozen vegetables, meat, pastry, ice cream and ready meals are made to be stored frozen, usually at -18°C or colder. Every time they warm up, ice crystals change, texture suffers and the product loses shelf life, even if it is refrozen.

We plan frozen loads so the product moves from one freezer to the next without warming: a trailer at temperature, short handovers and receivers ready to take the load.

Keeping frozen food frozen.

Most frozen-food losses happen in the minutes between freezers, not on the open road.

  • Loaded already frozen

Product is loaded at its storage temperature. A trailer holds frozen product frozen, it does not freeze warm product.

  • A trailer at temperature first

The trailer is brought to its set point before loading begins.

  • Short, planned handovers

Loading and deliveries are timed so product spends as little time as possible outside a freezer.

  • Prepared meals by their label

Frozen ready meals travel frozen. Chilled ready meals travel at their labelled chilled temperature, not on a frozen load.

Frequently asked questions

What temperature do frozen foods travel at?

Frozen foods are generally stored and moved at -18°C or colder. Each load travels at the carrying temperature the shipper specifies.

Why is refreezing a problem?

When frozen food warms, ice crystals melt and reform larger, which damages texture and shortens shelf life. Some products also become unsafe if they thaw for too long.

Can a refrigerated trailer freeze food that is not yet frozen?

No. Transport refrigeration holds frozen product at temperature. Food should be frozen to its storage temperature before loading, for example by blast freezing.

Do chilled ready meals travel with frozen food?

No. Chilled ready meals need their labelled chilled temperature and travel separately from frozen loads.

What do you need to plan a frozen load?

The products, storage temperature, pallet count and weight, collection and delivery points, receiving times and any date or batch requirements.
